#120. The Brian Jonestown Massacre – ‘Hide And Seek’ (live 2009)

Legit never seen Anton Newcombe actually being a frontman until just now.

Having a bit of a BJM nostalgia day, trawling through Youtube clips, and look what came on: this early-days tune which has been in and out of BJM setlists for more than twenty years, featuring a way more energetic than normal Newcombe, who generally stays pretty still and off to the side of the stage when he’s playing, doing a bit of moody Morrissey posturing during the outro. I believe this is from 2008 or early 2009.

‘Hide and Seek’ originally featured on Spacegirl and Other Favourites back in 1995, in a much slower arrangement. The version that more people have heard, though, is a faster live version buried on disc two of the CD version of the Tepid Peppermint Wonderland compilation from 2004, which recasts the song as an uncharacteristically anthemic and uncharacteristically nineties jam from the BJM. An oddly refreshing rockstar moment from one of the most anti-rockstarĀ rock musiciansĀ out there.
